Indigenous Participation in the Resources Sector Working Group
The Working Group was established by the Standing Committee on Regional Development to report to the Regional Development Council to consider how to increase Indigenous participation in the resources sectors and ensure the benefits of the mining/resources boom flow to Indigenous communities, by:
- examining what current programs are in existence (in both the public and private sectors) with a view to identifying gaps and therefore future work; and
- establishing partnerships with Industry and Community stakeholders where possible.
This group has been replaced by the Management Working Group.
Regional Manufacturing Working Group
The Working Group was established by the Standing Committee on Regional Development to report to the Regional Development Council on the following issues:
- the scope to better coordinate State/Commonwealth responses to manufacturing closures;
- the scope to pursue opportunities to collaborate in the development of programs and services which improve the competitiveness of existing manufacturing operations in regional areas;
- the scope to collaborate in pursuing opportunities to attract new manufacturing investment to regional areas; and
- the potential for a regional structural adjustment framework be investigated.

Framework for Cooperation for Regional Development Working Group
This Working Group was established to develop strategies and prepare a work plan for implementing the Framework for Co-operation for Regional Development, endorsed in July 2006 by the Regional Development Council (RDC).
The framework is based on a shared commitment to the following key principles; minimise duplication and overlap; encourage communities to set their own priorities; cooperate with each other; cooperate with the private sector; use existing systems wherever possible; build on the competitive and comparative advantage of regions; consult with each other wherever possible, where new programmes and services are being developed; and leverage existing resources.
This group has been replaced by the Management Working Group.
Skill Shortages Working Group
The Working Group was established by the Standing Committee on Regional Development to report to the Regional Development Council, and will assist in providing a regional dimension to COAG (Council of Australian Governments) work on skill shortages. The work will include:
- the level of skill shortages in selected regions and regional Australia in general;
- the range of initiatives already in place across jurisdictions to address skill shortages and labour market participation in regions and what jurisdictions can learn from each other;
- consultations with communities and or regional networks on skill shortages and labour issues and how government can assist to address these;
- identify impediments to addressing these issues and opportunities for new approaches and responses and identify regional stakeholders that RDC should influence to implement these.
This work will focus on issues of skill shortages and labour market participation in provincial centres and remote communities and what input can it provide on the national strategy that COAG is developing, e.g. key issues/regional strategies and what is working at the local level.
The result of this work can be seen in the report 'Attracting and Retaining Skilled People in Regional Australia: a practitioners guide.'
This group has been replaced by the Management Working Group.

- sharing information about recent developments in research between jurisdictions;
- influencing the development of new regional research projects;
- identifying and pursuing opportunities to engage in collaborative regional research projects.
This group has been replaced by the Management Working Group.
