Communiqué - 29 March 2000

  1. The meeting, called at the Regional Australia Summit, saw all Ministers register their deep concern that, in the face of growing challenge and change, Regional and Rural Australia needs the sustained support of all levels of government in helping create opportunity and prosperity.
  2. Ministers agreed to work together to establish a clear framework for cooperation between all levels of government in the area of regional development. This was a particular recommendation of the Regional Australia Summit.
  3. The meeting also established a time-limited taskforce to help work through some immediate and concrete opportunities for improved collaboration and cooperation including in the areas of shopfront service delivery, regional leadership development and one stop shops (including opportunities for the different levels of government to provide each other's services).
  4. The proposed policy framework for improved cooperation in regional development, and the reports on specific opportunities for collaboration and cooperation, will be considered at a future ministerial meeting around the middle of the year.
